G-Bones wheels

So lets talk about Powell Peralta's G-bone wheels (Guerrero bones), this could likely be one of the first if not the first street skating wheel ever made.....big statement right! well lets break it down prior to the 80's street revolution, every wheel out there for street skating was basically a soft cruiser type wheel. Still a great wheel but not necessarily the wheel you need for 4 wheel slide speed control, or to begin the process of board slides and eventually handrails and ledge riding. although there were other street wheels from the 80's like the OJ street razor, and the Powell Street Rats (both great wheels) I find that the size of the G-Bone being a 64mm gave you the speed you need on the rough streets that surround our daily skate.....Combine the speed with the perfection of Bones Urethane and you have a combination that can slide along some of the roughest pavement, with no fear of flat spotting or sticking. Concrete, Masonite,  Pool or any other possible surface the G-bone handles with speed and just enough slide to have the control needed for style, but enough grip to not slide out. in other words perfection.

In the 80's you had the first few designated street skaters coming up with names like Tommy Guerrero, Natas, Jesse Martinez, Eric Dressen and Bill Danforth to name a few, and you can always add Jeff Kendall to the mix. Although they were recognized as street skaters, like all skaters of that time period they skated it all...

Back then a skate video consisted of tons of vert, bowl, mini ramp, pool and maybe one or two street parts. You could tell that the movement towards street was starting to happen. It just made more sense to build the sport on this aspect, as not every kid has a vert ramp in their neighborhood, creating a wider range of kids who can start skating and eventually driving the market to where it is today with skate parks in every town. Much like the longboard success of today, every kid has one, meaning every parent/ government official knows a skateboarder, and in turn we get more parks....having the cities recognize all forms of transportation assists with my  internal hatred of cars, and the eventual end of. but that's another story.

Now to say a few things about Tommy Guerrero, legend, artist, musician, and visionary come to mind. The way that Tommy rode the street was so fluid and smooth that it is still unmatched by many skaters today. His part from the Future Primitive video is still one of my favorite parts today and a huge influence on my skateboarding. When the hills of San Francisco are your playground, and you combine that with some raw talent...the end result is...... I guess a , Tommy Guerrero.....Although Tommy was Powell's street rider, like any skater from that era, nothing was in the way and he could clearly kill any environment from street to ramp to pool.

Tommy Guerrero's, music sounds like you are watching him skate "if that makes any sense"  I can listen to a Tommy Guerrero song and clearly see him cruising down the streets in the same flow as the tune. If you have not heard his music check it on iTunes........

G-bones still kill it today and the re-release is just as good as the original, if you like to skate fast, they are a great wheel to use, regardless of what terrain you ride, G-bones are a great if not perfect ride.
